D lived with his mother, 2 wives, and his children and grandchildren. He had 4 daughters and 3 sons, but one of his daughters died of an unidentified illness while studying to be a nurse two years ago. Only N, one of his three other daughters, still lived with him. D owned 5 acres of land on which he grew Jowar, lentils, Maize, rice and wheat. Some of the land he owned housed a flour mill and a cattle-shed housing ten cows and some buffaloes. The mill was built by D which processed wheat into flour for his own family and for other villagers for a fee. D’s wives took care of the housework and the cattle; doing chores like sorting the rice from the chaff and washing the cows and buffaloes. Because of the time D spent at school, he was among the more educated villagers and was put in charge of the local ration shop by the local government, making him into an influential figure in the village. His chief source of income, however, was the harvest from his farm.

His daughter N was a gram-panchayat member who travelled to the next village over every Friday to her gram-panchayat meetings - discussing new government schemes and sorting out disputes.
