M had 3 wives, 6 sons, 2 daughters-in-law and 2 grand-children. M used to be a Forest Services employee before he became the sarpanch (village head). On being asked about the unusual number of his wives, M said that he did not know any better for being illiterate, and one of his sons confirmed that he wasn’t very good with details. He married his first wife a long time ago and they don’t have children together. His second and third wives married him to escape fraught domestic situations of their own. He was a Sarpanch of the village for a long time.

The walls of his house were painted white and decorated with designs in blue; in tribal cultures, his son explained to us, tree-like designs painted in blue signify marriage. The family generally re-painted the house once a year. Two of his sons got married recently and had babies, but one of the babies was displaying symptoms of malnutrition. Three of his sons worked at a factory manufacturing rubber parts for cars, one attended the local Ashram-shala, and another one had passed an exam for employment at the local police station. All his children visited home frequently whenever they feel homesick or have days off.

On most days, M spent all of his time tending to his farm and taking care of his cattle. He had 3 cows, 2 buffaloes and 2 hens.
