V lived with his wife, R and although they had four sons, all four of them lived away from home for various reasons. Three of them worked in Pune, from where they sent some money back home every month, and one lived in the dormitory of the school he attended. V owned a few acres of farm-land, two bulls and a hen and he and his wife also worked on other people’s farms for extra income.

One of their sons lived with V’s sister in a nearby village even when back from work because not having children of her own, she had more or less adopted him.

V’s house had a small plaque with the numbers ‘1995’ written on it, which he told us signified the year his house had been built. However, this was debatable as whenever the house became in any way unstable, V broke it down and rebuilt it. This, V said, was the third or fourth iteration of the original house. Eachtime, he built the house himself and used wood for the main structure and a mixture of dung and mud for plastering and building the walls. Even as we spoke, he was considering knocking it down again.
