B lived in a family of four and owned two ponds which supplied water to a nearby trough where fish were reared to be sold later. They were part of a larger family spread out all over the village, including a cousin who lived in a gaudy house attached to B’s house and taught at a school 25 kilometres away. All the women in B’s immediate and excluded cooked together. His daughter attended a private school, “sarkaari school mein padaai kaha hoti hai?” (when does anything educational ever happen in a government school?)

In B’s village, villagers coordinated with their neighbours and so calculated when to switch the last batch of fish with a new one so that their fish didn’t all go to the market at the same time and drive prices down. B did not use a middleman to sell his fish and instead drove to the nearest city to sell them himself.
