D lived with his wife and two children; D’s wife sent her daughter to run ahead and meet us while she finished washing the dishes. The way to D’s house was narrower than most other lanes with smaller houses placed closer together and open drains lining its sides. Their house stood next to a huge neem tree and a pile of rocks used for construction, and had three rooms which were divided between two families and D’s family rented two of those rooms.

D was a daily wage labourer who worked on farms, and when work at his village died down, he moved nine kilometres away to his current village, “It’s been almost 5 years. I have a piece of land in my native village Lingala, but I do not have enough resources to be able to build a house there so I have to manage things here.” D had a ration card for the government, although it wasn’t enough to feed his family, and they were supplied with purified water from the nearby river. Neighbouring women washed dishes, combed their hair, and dried their clothes next to children who ran around and played with each other and teased D’s wife about all the attention she was getting by saying things like “Smile, you have become a heroine now.”
