L migrated to this village from the Nellore district in Andhra Pradesh. He lived with his wife, two daughters and a son. Elaborate henna tattoos covered his hands, and L explained that he had them because he engaged in physical labour for most of the day and believed that henna kept the skin cool and lowered body temperature. A pet dog and cat, both of whom seemed to get on well with each other, completed the household.
Their house stood without a fence around it, with fields on three sides and a paved road on one. There were no other houses for hundreds of meters around them. Most of the family’s household expenses were consumed by rent and electricity bills, but while L and his wife were initially concerned about their accommodations, they appeared to have adjusted well to their surroundings.
