The walls of F’s home were covered in blue and white tiles and the floor was overlaid with marble. Although their house was small, all the space had been utilised to the optimum and the lack of space did not deter the family from displaying an aquarium with 8 fishes. Pet hens roamed outside, a small remnant of the 26 hens they had owned which died of bird flu.

F worked as a rag-picker and his older son helped him in his work when he was not preparing for exams. Their house was supplied with water until 4 PM every evening and so the family had no need for a borewell. A religious symbol hung above their door, and F’s wife, M, explained that it was the Lohe Quran, or the amulet of Allah. F and M lived in a community where people from different backgrounds and religions mixed with each other and the communal disturbances present in the rest of the state seemed not to affect their interactions. On festivals and special occasions, families visited each other and sat down to eat meals together.
